While it is common to shed approximately 150 hairs a day, excessive hair loss may be the result of an underlying condition. Many of those suffering with this frustrating problem may try to rely on home remedies or over-the-counter treatments, but the most effective treatment has to begin by identifying the cause. Straight from one of our own board-certified dermatology nurse practitioners, obtaining a detailed history is key in finding the potential culprit.
Here are some of the questions considered when evaluating hair loss:
- Are there smooth bald patches?
- Is there a widening of the part?
- Does it appear that the hairline is receding?
- Is there any pain, tenderness, or itching of the scalp?
- Have there been any hormonal changes/pregnancy?
- Has there been any rapid weight loss?
- Is there an increase in stress?
- Recent surgery or illness?
- Any new medications?
These answers may guide us in the right direction, but it is still necessary to conduct a detailed physical exam. This may consist of an evaluation of the hair shaft(s) through a microscope, blood work, or even scalp biopsies to asses the follicle(s).
Once the underlying issue has been identified, treatment may begin, Some of these treatments may include steroids (intralesional/oral), supplements, or prescription medication (oral/topical).
It is important to understand that no one treatment works for everyone, and the process of treatment can be stubborn. Therefor, anyone who is suffering from this should see someone who specializes in hair loss so they can accurately identify the root cause.
Our double board-certified dermatology nurse practitioners specialize in hair loss, skin disease, skin cancer, acne, psoriasis, and many more.
