Moles

Moles play a significant role in dermatology as they are commonly assessed for potential health concerns. These pigmented skin growths are usually harmless, but changes in size, color, or shape can be indicative of skin conditions or, in rare cases, skin cancer. Dermatologists carefully examine moles during routine skin checks to monitor any alterations that might require further investigation. While most moles are benign, prompt evaluation by a dermatologist is crucial for early detection and appropriate management if any abnormalities are observed.

Skin Conditions We Treat at The DERM Center

ABSCESS

An abscess is a localized collection of pus caused by an infection, often with swelling and inflammation around it. It can develop on any part of the body and is usually painful and warm to the touch. Treatment often involves drainage and antibiotics.

ACCUTANE (ISOTRETINOIN)

Accutane, a powerful form of vitamin A, is prescribed for severe acne that hasn’t responded to other treatments. It dramatically reduces the size of the skin’s oil glands and the amount of oil they produce, and it can also slow down how quickly skin cells inside the pore are produced.

ACNE

This common skin condition occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to various forms of pimples, blackheads, and cysts. It’s most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages.

ACTINIC KERATOSES

These rough, scaly patches on the skin result from years of sun exposure. They are often found on the face, ears, back of the hands, and arms, and can sometimes progress to squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.

ALOPECIA

Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. This condition can affect just the scalp or the entire body and can be temporary or permanent. It can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions, or a normal part of aging.

ALOPECIA AREATA

An autoimmune disorder that results in unpredictable hair loss. In most cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter. The extent of hair loss and regrowth varies greatly from person to person.

CONTACT DERMATITIS

Contact dermatitis arises from skin contact with allergens or irritants, leading to redness, itching, and inflammation. Our dermatologists employ precise diagnostic techniques to identify triggers and develop effective treatment plans.

CYSTIC ACNE

This severe form of acne occurs when cysts form deep underneath your skin, resulting from a combination of bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells getting trapped in your pores. The condition is most common in teenagers and young adults.

CYSTS

Cysts are noncancerous, closed pockets of tissue that can be filled with fluid, pus, or other material. They can appear on any part of the body and vary in size. They generally aren’t painful unless they become infected or inflamed.

ECZEMA/ATOPIC DERMATITIS

This condition is characterized by red, itchy skin, which can result in a rash. In severe cases, the skin may weep, bleed, and crust over. Eczema can occur anywhere but usually affects the arms and behind the knees. It can be accompanied by asthma or hay fever.

FOLLICULITIS

An inflammation of the hair follicles, often appearing as small, red bumps, which can be itchy or painful. It can be caused by bacterial or fungal infections and is commonly seen in areas of friction and shaving.

This category includes a range of conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis, fungal infections, and hair loss. Symptoms can vary from flaky, itchy scalp to hair thinning and bald spots.

The most serious type of skin cancer, melanoma forms in melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. It can develop anywhere on the body and is more likely to invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body than other forms of skin cancer.

MELASMA

This skin condition causes brown to gray-brown patches, usually on the face. It’s more common in women and often triggered by changes in hormones due to pregnancy or birth control pills, and sun exposure can make it worse.
